About Us
Melbourne Insight Meditation Group (MIM) is a community of meditators practicing in the tradition of Insight (Vipassana) Meditation, which emphasises direct experience through the practice of meditation. The tradition was taken to the West by teachers such as Christopher Titmuss. The practice is based on Buddhist techniques for meditation, without purporting any beliefs, rather offering an invitation to inquire with intimacy into life here and now.
We aim to support each other in establishing and deepening practice, as well as building and strengthening the community. Whether you are a beginner or experienced meditator, you are welcome to join us. We offer a programme of weekly meditation sits, events and a community for exploring the contemporary application of authentic Buddhist teachings in our lives.
The group was founded in 2009, inspired by the teachings of members of the lay Insight Teachers' Circle of Australia. Today over 2000 people receive the regular newsletter and many more are connected through Facebook. The weekly sits support continuity of practice, the workshops and Dharma Gatherings bring connection with community and the retreats offer potential for deepening of practice. This is all organised through the generosity of volunteers and the teachings are offered on a dana basis.
The weekly sits are held at a variety of locations and convened by lay Dharma Facilitators. MIM invites lay Insight Meditation Teachers and occasionally academics on Buddhist topics to lead some of the sits.
For details on the teachers and dana, please see the Visiting Teachers page. For details on the Australian and International community within which this is offered, please visit the sites on the Resources page.

Insight Meditation
Insight Meditation refers to both Buddhist meditation practices and a largely Western form of Buddhism, which is either free from ritual or has minimal ritual. A common thread is the focus on settling the mind, developing a level of clarity, and looking carefully at one’s experience. Aims of Insight Meditation include coming to a deep understanding of who, what and how we are, and finding a sense of connection with, and compassion for, other living beings.
